Cleveland-based Cliffs Natural Resources has announced that it is halting production at the Pinnacle and Green Ridge No. 1 mines in West Virginia. Cliffs says the Wyoming County mines will be idle until Feb. 28 to balance production and inventory with lower customer demand.
Demand for metallurgical coal used to fire blast furnaces has slumped with the steel industry.
Idling the mines is expected to affect about 360 employees, though Cliffs says work will continue at an associated prep plant.
