Indian Steel Minister Seeks Iron Ore Export Restrictions

The Press Trust Of India has cited Indian steel minister, Mr Virbhadra Singh, as saying that that he will talk to Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, PM and Mr Pranab Mukherjee, finance minister, seeking a restriction on exports of iron ore.

The Indian steel industry has been demanding an increase in export duty on iron ore to 15% on an ad valorem basis. Currently, there is a 5% export duty on iron ore lumps while the duty on iron ore fines is zero.
