China's crude steel output dipped 0.3% from the previous year to 45.1 million tons in March, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Friday.
Compared with February, crude steel production increased 12% in March.
In the first quarter, crude steel output reached 127.4 million tons, representing a year-on-year growth of 1.4%.
Luo Bingsheng, vice chairman of the China Iron and Steel Association, said China's 71 large- and medium-sized steel enterprises suffered a combined loss of RMB 1.51 billion in the first two months of this year due to the waning demand, and the loss continued to expand in March.
Iron ore production dipped 1.1% compared with a year earlier to 61.7 million tons in March, while pig iron production increased 3.9% to 43.2 million tons.
