Miranda Minerals Confirms Burnside Coal Resource

JSE-listed Miranda Mineral Holdings claimed on Wednesday to have confirmed a 35.5-million ton coal resource, of which 8.9-million is open-castable, at its Burnside project, in KwaZulu-Natal.

It said in a statement that, given the available data, the resource could be developed to produce an export quality 12% ash coal, with coking properties, and a 22 Mj/kg local powerstation coal.

The project area involved four separate blocks, one of which was open-castable, and three of which are underground. There were two economic coal seams, the ‘Top Seam’ and the ‘Bottom Seam’, which were separated by the uneconomic material.

“There is a good coking coal product in the Bottom Seam, which can be either exported or sent to local steel producers.

“More detailed work and drilling is needed to determine the specific markets for the coal,” the company said.

Further planned exploration included an additional six percussion boreholes, with wireline logging, and a further four cored boreholes. These holes needed to be drilled to increase the resource status to measured.

Operationally, Burnside is contiguous to its Uithoek project, where mining rights could be secured by the end of 2009.
