Bundaberg Coal Rush Continues

Another mining company has jumped on the band-wagon searching for coking coal deposits around the Bundaberg region of Queensland, with two potential mine sites less than 40km from the CBD.

Waratah Coal has applied for exploration permits at Goodwood and the Kolan River, and chief executive officer Peter Lynch described the company as “committed” to the region.

“We're hoping to target extensive deposits of coking coal in the area,” Mr Lynch said.

Following the lead of rival company Northern Energy Corporation (NEC), Mr Lynch confirmed that if deposits were found, they may be shipped out through the Port of Bundaberg.

“If we find coal, we would definitely be developing it, and we would consider all options for export,” Mr Lynch said.

“The (Bundaberg) port is obviously the closest, and a shorter distance is best, but it comes down to cost and environmental acceptability too.”
