An Australian company is proposing a $375 million coal plant in south-eastern Montana that would produce high-efficiency coal and synthetic crude oil.
Executives of Ambre Energy say the project would produce up to 4.4 million tons of coal a year that had been stripped of moisture to increase its energy content. The plant would also make 1.6 million barrels of synthetic crude annually.
The company is pursuing a federal Department of Energy loan guarantee that would back 80% of the project's cost with taxpayer money.
Ambre Energy Chief Executive Edek Choros declined to say which mine would be the source for the coal. But Gov. Brian Schweitzer confirmed the company is pursuing a contract with a mine in Montana's Powder River Basin, which straddles the Wyoming border.
