The Montana Tunnels Mine in Jefferson City has announced that 82 people have been laid off from the end of the work day Tuesday.
The mine now has a staff of 104. The ownership group is seeking investors to help finance the expansion of the 23-year-old open pit mine which produces lead, zinc, silver and gold.
General manager Tim Smith says the laid-off workers primarily worked in mining and mine maintenance. The existing pit was mined out at the end of November, at which time the workers were sent home for 60 days with pay.
The mine has enough ore stockpiled to keep its milling operations busy until April. If mining doesn't resume by then, Smith says the mine will go into "care and maintenance" status, with more layoffs likely.
