Philippines Seizes 1400 Tons Of Illegally-Mined Manganese

A task force of the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has seized P8 million worth of manganese ore illegally extracted from Capas, Tarlac.

Environment Secretary Lito Atienza said yesterday that the Environmental Law Enforcement Task Force (ELETF), led by retired police general Pedro Bulaong, seized a total of 1,411.68 metric tons of manganese ore in a two-day operation in Capas. The operation was conducted after confirming reports of illegal mining activities in the area.

In his report to the Secretary, Bulaong said they arrested four people who were involved in the transport or stockpiling of the manganese.

Those arrested were identified as Manny Mahusay, Rolando Carino, Oman Santo Facturan, Jaime Penaverde. They are now detained at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Manila.

The suspects were charged before the provincial prosecutor of Tarlac for illegal possession and theft of mineral ores.
