South Africa exported 4,549,000 tonnes in material of ferroalloys in the calendar year of 2008, down by 10% compared to 5,004,000 tonnes in 2007.
However, the unit price averaged on exports in 2008 came to ZAR 10,930 per tonne, doubled that of ZAR 5,218 per tonne in 2007.
The quantities of ferroalloys exported from South Africa in 2008 were influenced largely by a cut of 10% on the supply of electric power caused by a crisis at the end of January 2008. Also, the financial crisis caused a substantial fall on exports in the October to December quarter of 2008.
With regards to the quantities of main ferroalloys exported from South Africa in the calendar year of 2008, the country exported 3,207,000 tons of high carbon ferrochrome, down by 9%, but the average unit price rose to ZAR 9,781 per tonne of material.
