Russian Railways Shipments Down Heavily This Year

Minprom reports that shipments by Russian Railways from January to April 2009 were336.8 million tonnes, down by 26% year-on-year.

A breakdown of some of the products are as follows:

1. Coke 2.6 million tonnes down by 40.2%
2. Stone coal more than 86 million tonnes down by 18.6 %
3. Oil and oil products 75.8 million tonnes down by 5.1%
4. Iron and manganese ore more than 28 million tonnes down by 23.7%
5. Ferrous metals 19.6 million tonnes down by 33.4%
6. Chemical and mineral fertilizers 12.7 million tonnes down by 20.4%
7. Grain and mill products 8.3 million tonnes up by 19.5%
8. Construction cargoes 34.4 million tonnes down by 47.5%

Shipments in April 2009 were 89.2 million tonnes, down by 22.7 %. Comparing to April 2008 the shipments volumes decreased: stone coal by 12.6 %, coke by 38.6 %, oil and oil products by 2.4 %, iron and manganese ore by 15.6 %, ferrous metals down by 36 %, chemical and mineral fertilizers by 14.3 %, and construction cargoes down by 39.2 %.

In April 2009 comparing to March 2009 the shipment growth was: coke down by 5.5 %, iron and manganese ore down by 6.5 %, cement down by 18.2 %, timber down by 3.1 % and construction cargoes down by 9.3 %. Cargo turnover in last 4 months of 2009 decreased by 17.7 % and made 677.9 billion tariff t-km. Cargo turnover in April made 177 billion tariff t kilometers down by 14.6 %.
