OM Manganese Exports Millionth Tonne To China

The Northern Territory Government has defended encouraging resource exports while promoting the need to tackle climate change.

The manganese ore exporter OM Manganese yesterday celebrated exporting its one millionth tonne of the product to China.

The company's mine at Bootu Creek near Tennant Creek has been operating for two years and has an estimated life of more than eight years.

Company manager Paul Thomas says manganese prices are at record highs and the company is hoping to find further deposits.

"The exploration program's significantly increasing this year, we've got a fairly substantial tenement holding, we've got at least another 10 kilometres strike land for economic mineralisation that we're exploring this year," he said.

"That's similar to what we've already done so we're hoping that our mine, we're going to be around for a lot longer."

But Mines Minister Chris Natt says a balance needs to be struck between economic drivers and action on climate change.

"Mining plays an important role in our economy as does the climate change prospects into the future," he said.

"This Government has just come out with a climate change proposal and I urge everyone to get onto the website and have a say.

"It's important to get a balance between our economy and what benefits our economy and the climate change aspects and the Government is looking closely at that."
