State Government Helps Tata Steel In Land Purchase

The Tamil Nadu government has agreed to help Tata Steel in identifying the land for their Rs 20.5 billion Titanium Dioxide project, which has drawn flak from several political parties in the state.

The proposed project needed 10,000 acres of land for mining in the southern districts of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli. The state would help in identifying land owners and would obtain records like title deeds, official sources said. However, the government would not directly acquire land on Tata Steel's behalf but at the same time would ensure that the acquisition process goes smoothly for the steel major.

The State government had decided against acquiring land on a large-scale for private industries, the sources added.

Tata Steel had informed the government that in the absence of essential documents like title deeds it would be a major hurdle in acquiring land for the project. The government had instructed the Collectors of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin to help the company on the matter, the sources said.

The project came in for criticism from the opposition parties as the land required for the project would deprive the land owners of their livelihood. When the land for the project was not forthcoming, Tata Steel sought the state's help in land acquisition process but the government refused to acquire land on its behalf, the sources added.
