A mining company is experimenting with mixing different grades of iron ore to extend the life of a mine in Australia's Northern Territory.
Frances Creek iron ore site manager, Hugh Gilbery, says it is mixing lower grade material in with high grade ore.
He says the lower grade material wouldn't usually be included in the final product to be shipped, but this way the resource can be extended.
"So if we can keep that constant grade, aim for that, and put in a lower grade to bring the spec down of our material, then really we're helping stretch out our mine life, and just using that material now to get more ships online and hopefully keep the money coming in."
